Guelph, Ontario-based cleantech company behind energy storage solution for Toronto Transit Commission e-bus fleet

[Guelph, Ontario – January 28, 2022]

A Guelph, Ontario area-based cleantech company is celebrating the commissioning of the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) three new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, which will support the TTC’s current fleet of 60 e-buses, as well as the additional 300 e-buses it procured in 2021, to be delivered this year.

Anvil Crawler Development Corp (ACDC), a full-service clean energy technology firm specializing in engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance for sustainable and renewable technology (e.g. solar, energy storage, and EV), was selected by Panasonic Eco Solutions Canada as an integration partner for the project.

ACDC integrated the battery energy storage systems at Toronto’s Arrow Road, Mount Dennis, and Eglinton stations. The integration included rack assembly, inverters, lithium ion batteries, and energy management software into a fully enclosed custom container.

The Panasonic battery energy storage systems will be utilized by the TTC to support e-bus charging at each station. These systems will also enable each facility to support ancillary services such as black start capabilities, energy arbitrage, peak shaving, and other grid resiliency measures.

The TTC is currently operating the largest fleet of pure electric buses in North America.

The operational TTC e-bus fleet comprises $140 million of a total $1.8 billion investment in the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF) for Toronto, introduced in 2016. It is part of Toronto’s TransformTO project for climate change, with the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.
